In Mozambique, 63.7% of the population lives on less than $2 a day (WB 2020), and 53% of the population, as much as 70% in rural areas, is considered poor, according to the Multidimensional Poverty Index of the United Nations Development Programme. When faced with such a harsh and difficult reality, Esseoquattro could only embrace the objectives of CEFA, an Italian non-governmental organization, which for 50 years has been giving the world’s poorest communities the opportunity to achieve food self-sufficiency and respect of basic rights (education, employment, gender equality, child protection).
“The project we have chosen to support deeply engages and strikes a chord with us because it has the empowerment of women as its central focus. The beneficiaries are 1,480 people – women members of 3 farmers’ cooperatives and their children, elementary school pupils. By recognizing that these women play a fundamental role in the country’s sustainable and inclusive development, CEFA supports their empowerment by organizing training courses designed especially for them,” said Silvia Ortolani, Sales Director at Esseoquattro.
CEFA volunteers will work side by side with women from the cooperatives for 12 months to:
- improve their management skills
- actively include them in decision-making processes
- improve their dietary situation, with increased consumption of milk and dairy products, which have high nutritional value especially for children.
